Pre-Rodeo Activities Will Begin This Evening
For Queen Entrants
Tonight begins the activities and fun for the eight 101 Ranch
Rodeo contestants and it will continue down to the last cowboy on
board the final bull Saturday night, August 26.
The first event is a lesson on poise to be given by Mrs. Juanita
Herron in the Conestoga Room at the Pioneer National Bank tonight at
7:30.
The girls will meet their individual hostesses, all members of
the personal development committee of the Ponca City Business and
Professional Women's Club, which is sponsoring the queen contest.
Next week there will be a lesson on make-up, given by Mrs. Neida
Rogers, and booster trips. The girls and their hostesses are to be
entertained by civic clubs and they will be special guests at a
meeting of the BPW s Club. There will be a luncheon given in their
honor.
On the opening day of rodeo, Thursday, August 24, the queens will
be seen in the 5:30 p.m. parade and again in the 7: 30 grand entry
at the rodeo grounds.
Mrs. Herron, co-chairman with Mrs. Rogers of the personal
development committee, is a graduate of the Loyce Stinson Hawk
Modeling School in Tulsa and for a time was an instructor in the
school.
Mrs. Rogers represents a line of cosmetics and serves as a
consultant on makeup.
Other committee members who will be hostesses for the girls are
Mrs. Edith Tindel, president of the club, Mrs. Katherine Hinton,
Mrs. Earlene Johndrow, Mrs. Eunice Chittum, Mrs. Mabel Petty and
Mrs. Arlene Carriger.
Queen contestants and their sponsors are Sharon Barthel, Marland
Roundup Club; Terry Jean Hewgley, 101 Memorial Trail Riders; Deanna
Johns, Braman Saddle Club; Lavona Olsen, Newkirk Range Riders; Janie
Roby, Northern Oklahoma 'College Ag Club; Bernita May Sanders,
Pioneer Cowboys and Campers; Joyce Spoon, Blackwell - Saddle Club,
and Diana Lynn Wells, Ponca Trail Blazers.

Judges Select 2 Queens To Reign During Weekend 101
Ranch Rodeo
History repeated itself at the 101 Ranch Rodeo when two contestants tied for first place. They are Terri Hewgley,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale j Hewgley, 1609 Northeast Woodland, and Deanna Johns,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D.
Johns of Blackwell. Two queens also were selected in 1960 when
co-winners were the former Bessie. Cales (now
Mrs. Bobby Ratliff) and the former Carole Muchmore (now Mrs.
James Barnett).
Sharon Barthel, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Holmes, 128 Ranch Drive, was the first runner-up
Thursday night and Joyce Spoon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Spoon, Blackwell, won the second
runner-up trophy.
For the first time a Miss Congeniality was named, elected by the
girls themselves. She is Janie Roby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
H. Roby, 1920 Willow.
Miss Jeannie Roby, the 1966 queen of the 101 Ranch Rodeo, presented
the trophy to the winners. Bouquets of roses were given to them by Mrs. Neita
Rogers,
chairman of the queen hostesses, and Gene Blake of the Rodeo Foundation, chairman for the queen contest.
A
trophy saddle was donated by Sears Roebuck Company. It was
announced that a second saddle and trophy had been ordered.
Presentation of the saddle was made by Ben Cowan, manager of the
local Sears store.
Queens were judged on personality, poise and dress at a
luncheon Thursday in the Chariot Room of the QuoVadis.
Attending with the contestants; were each girl's hostess, members of the personal development committee of the Ponca City
Business and Professional Women's Club. Co-chairman with Mrs.
Rogers was Mrs.
Juanita Herron.
Judges at the luncheon were
Mrs. Blanche Meyers of Oklahoma City, president of the
Oklahoma Business and Professional Women; Larry E. Stephenson of
Oklahoma City, senior vice president of Liberty
National Bank and Trust Company, and Bob Brown of KOTV,
Tulsa.
In the afternoon the queens
rode a western trail pattern and a western pleasure class
before Jim Scarbrough of Glencoe, riding judge.
Each queen contestant was presented a gift at the luncheon from
Mr. and Mrs. Blake and also received other gifts at noon and as
they appeared in the arena, donated by Ponca City merchants.
