Rodeo Queen Contest Entries Now Accepted
Entries are beginning to come in for the 1978 rodeo queen contest
which is held annually in conjunction with the 101 Ranch Rodeo.
Three aspirants for the 1978 title have returned entry blanks and
pictures, according to Mrs. Lois Scott, queen chairman.
This year, as in past years, the Ponca City Business and
Professional Women's Club is hostess group for the queen
contestants, providing each of the them with a personal hostess.
Reigning queen of the 101 Ranch Rodeo is Marcinda Mitchell of
Sallisaw, sponsored by Hamilton's Sports Arena.
She will be in Ponca City for the rodeo and queen crowning on
Saturday night and will be a guest of Marcia Hickman in her home.
Tickets for the Aug. 17-19 rodeo are now on sale and may be
purchased at Ponca City supermarkets, Gene's Western Store, Cowboy
Supply House or at the Chamber of Commerce office, 112 North Third.
All young horsewomen who are 15 years old and not over 21, and
have never been married, are eligible to compete for the queen's
title.
Horsemanship will count up to 50 points, poise and personality
for up to 25 points and appearance for up to 25 points.
Trophies and special gifts will be given to the top four place
winners and to Miss Congeniality, who will be selected by the
contestants themselves.
The queen will receive a saddle, annually given by Forrest Miles
of Grace Memorial Chapel, the traditional red roses and a trophy.
First, second and third runners-up will receive bonds or gift
certificates' and Miss Congeniality will be awarded a trophy.
Entries should be mailed with pictures to Mrs. Scott, 400 North
Twelfth, Ponca City or to the Chamber of Commerce office. For

Rodeo Queen Judges Announced
Judges for the 101 Ranch Rodeo queen contest have
been announced by Lois Scott, chairman of the queen committee for
the Ponca City Business and Professional Women's Club.
They are Grover Barby of Dewey, Kevin Jewel of
Greene, Iowa, and Mrs.
Ed Young, Pawhuska.
Barby has judged 4-H and Quarter Horse Shows for a
number of years. He has judged a number of queen contests in rodeos
in northeastern Oklahoma, as well as, cavalcade and international
queen contests.
Employed at Phillips Petroleum Company at
Bartlesville, Barby owns and shows Quarter Horses.
Kevin Jewel is a former trainer and farm manager for
the Legendary Stables at Cedar Falls, Iowa. He has shown national
and international champion show horses. Jewel has judged 4-H shows,
Pony of Americas shows and all breed shows.
He attended Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, and
is a graduate of the Oklahoma State Horse Shoeing School at Oklahoma
City.
Mrs. Rose Young of Pawhuska completes the panel of
judges. She has judged the queen contest at the cavalcade in past
years. This year she helped judge the queen, contest at the World's
Largest Junior Rodeo in Idabell, Okla.
Mrs. Rose is active with the 4-H Horse 'program, OBRA and OJRA. She
has also shown Quarter Horses. She is a secretary at the Oklahoma
Extension office in Pawhuska.
The eight young horsewomen entered in this year's
queen competition are to be judged 50 percent on horsemanship, 25
percent on appearance and 25 percent on poise and personality.
Each will have a personal hostess, a member of the
BPW Club. They will appear in the grand entry before each
performance of the 101 Ranch Rodeo and in the rodeo parade. They
will be guests at a special queens' luncheon on Friday, sponsored by
the 101 Ranch Rodeo Foundation at Holiday Inn.
Other dining accommodations for the contestants will
be provided by the Blue Moon Restaurant, Pizza Inn and Sambo's.
Evans and Associates is.. providing stables for the
horses, and accommodations for the judges will be provided by
Holiday Inn, M&W Thrif-T-Wise and Miller's Market, Fourth and South
Avenue.
The queen will be presented a saddle, provided by
Grace Memorial Chapel; a trophy, courtesy Larry Black Sporting
Goods and Ponca Industrial Finance;
also two dozen long-stemmed red roses from Higdon's Flower Shop.
First runner-up receives a $100 savings bond from
Pioneer National Bank;
second runner-up, a $75 savings bond, from Sober Brothers. Fifty
dollars in Avon cosmetics goes to the third runner-up and a $40 gift
certificate from Cowboy Supply to the fourth runner-up.
Miss Congeniality will be presented with a trophy
from Ponca City BPW Club and a $10 gift certificate from The Image.
A silver buckle from the Rodeo Foundation goes to the one selling
the most tickets.
Climax of the 1978 contest will be the crowning of
the queen on Saturday at the rodeo.

Howell of the Kellyville Roundup Club was named the 101 Ranch Rodeo
Queen.
