Queen Contest Attracts Record-Setting Entries
Now in its 21st year, the 101 Ranch Rodeo Queen contest has
attracted a record number of contestants this year, according to
Betty Daine, chairman of the Queen Contest for the Ponca City
Business and Professional Women's Club.
The annual competition will be held during the 101 Ranch Rodeo
Aug. 18-20 at the rodeo grounds, west of the city, Daine said. She
is being assisted with the competition by Robin Smith and Darlene
Harrison of the Ponca City BPW Club.
For the first time, the Queen's luncheon and style show on Aug.
20 will be open to the public. Tickets may be purchased for $10
until Aug. 15 through the Chamber of Commerce office. Judging of the
queen contestants' horsemanship skills will also be open to the
public on Friday at 6:45 p.m. in the rodeo arena.
The 1987 101 Ranch Rodeo Queen Kristin Martin will be on hand to
assist with hosting the queen contestants, and will also appear with
Sam Smith, local horseman, on Channel 5's Good Morning Oklahoma from
6 to 7 a.m. on Aug. 11, promoting the 101 Ranch Rodeo.
Daine said queen contestants will arrive in Ponca City at 11
o'clock on the opening day of the 101 Ranch Rodeo, Aug. '18, and
will ride in the parade through downtown Ponca City at 5:30 that
evening. They will also ride in the grand entry each night of the
rodeo and participate in the coronation of the 1988101 Ranch Rodeo
Queen midway through the rodeo on Saturday night.
The queen contestants will be judged 50 percent on horsemanship,
25 percent on personality and 25 per-cent on poise and appearance.
The winning queen will receive a Barrel Racing saddle from Grace
Memorial Chapel, courtesy of Forrest Miles; a silver buckle from
Group One Realtors and two dozen roses from Creative Flowers, as
well as a trophy. All trophies will be provided by Ball's Trophy and
En-graving, courtesy Jim Ball.
The first runner-up in the com-petition will receive $100 Savings
Bond from Security Bank and a silver buckle from Eddie Douglas Auction
& Real Estate. $75 savings bonds will go to the second and third
runners-up, as well as silver buck-les. Pioneer Bank & Trust and
Frontier Federal Savings & Loan will provide the savings bonds and
Marcia Hickman of International Tours of Ponca City, and Dawson &
Hart Smith of Cornerstone Restaurant, will provide the silver
buckles.
The fourth runner-up will be given a $50 savings bond, courtesy
American National Bank and First National Bank and a silver buckle
furnished by Dorothy Lively of Marvel Makery, and Evelyn Pederson
of Shelter Ins.
The Ponca City BPW Club will furnish a trophy for Miss Congeniality,
and Ponca City Rodeo Foundation will provide a silver buckle for the
contestant selling the most tickets to the 101 Ranch Rodeo.
Ponca City FFA School Barn will furnish stables for the queen
contestant's horses and judges accommodations will be provided by
Jay Miller of Miller Market.
Dining accommodations will be supplied by Dawson and Hart Smith of
The Kettle; Rod Trant of El Palacio and the Rodeo Foundation will
host the queens' luncheon on Saturday.
The queen contestants will be entertained by members of the Ponca
City BPW Club while in Ponca City, Daine said. For further

Fourteen Area Women Vying For 101
Rodeo Queen Title
Fourteen young area horsewomen will be participating for the title
of 1988 101 Ranch Rodeo Queen during the annual 101 Ranch Rodeo
which kicks off here Aug. 18 in the 101 Ranch Rodeo Arena.
These queen contestants will be appearing at Wal-Mart, Food
Ware-house, Brace Books & More and McVay's Outfitters between 1 and
2 o'clock on the afternoon of Aug. 19 to sell tickets and autograph
programs for the rodeo, according to Betty Daine, chairman of the

Contest for the Ponca City Business and Professional Women's Club.
Working with Daine on the commit-tee are Robin Smith and Darlene
Harrison of the local club. Rex Kenslow of Kenslow Buick, Olds,
Pontiac, Cadillac & GMC is assisting with arrangements for the
queen contest, it was announced.

Tina Jolene Bales of Sayre was crowned 1988 101 Ranch Rodeo
Queen during Saturday's performance.
The new queen is a 21-year-old senior at Southwestern Oklahoma
State University, Weatherford.
